3 = "Over the crackling of the energy from the pylons, you think you can hear some sort of high pitched chittering. It's as if someone on this level is speaking, and the voice is being carried through the tower. You can't understand the language.";
4 = "The runes on the floor form some sort of display. They form and reform to display schematics, accounts of troop movements, and battle plans. However, they move far too fast for you to understand them. Your head starts to hurt, and you look away.";

6 = "You suddenly find the bridge becoming more insubstantial under your feet. You try to move back, only to find your feet sinking slowly through it. You struggle to escape, only to find yourself sinking through faster. You don't make it back to safety ...";

10 = "An alarm sounds. The deafening sound of a gong echoes through the caves. You hear loud shouts. A lot of warriors are living in this passage. They know you're here, and they aren't friendly.";
11 = "An alarm bell sounds. You stop, unsure how to proceed. A moment later, the alarm ends just as suddenly. Ahead, a guard yells, _Come on in! We expected you. You can stay in the inn. Just keep to yourself, or there'll be trouble._";
12 = "This passage goes for some distance under the mountains to the north, maybe even leaving Valorim altogether. However, the route is blocked by a pair of massive steel portcullises. This escape route is not for you. You turn back to the troubled land of Valorim.";
13 = "You are suddenly bathed in a blue, sparkling light. You feel stiff.";
14 = "A doomguard crashes to the floor. When it hits the ground, the portcullis at the west end of the cavern opens.";

18 = "You stand just outside a massive stone circle. Eight stone spires, each fifty feet tall, surround a massive, black stone altar. Your nerves sing with the desire to enter.";
19 = "These old, crusty pots provide a clue of what this complex was used for. There are weird, twisted bones and scales in the black goop at the bottom. Maybe this is where experiments to create new, horrible monsters took place. It's probably good news that it's been abandoned.";
20 = "This tunnel is filled with the smell of ozone and fresh oil. You hear the familiar sound of the vahnatai's cursed magical machinery. However, the sound is not right. It's rough, out of sync, as if it has not been maintained properly.";
21 = "The beams in this room have been left directed on a large crystal pillar. They are slowly filling it with energy, storing it for some dark purpose. Oddly, everything in here is dusty. Nobody has worked here for months.";

23 = "Sometimes vahnatai travelers briefly rest here while passing through.";
24 = "The ground shudders under your feet. You hear a grinding sound from the moving floor nearby.";
25 = "You taste some of the mushrooms and gruel. They are flavorless, but seem edible. You take a bit. After you remove the food, the box magically replenishes itself!";
26 = "Suddenly, the floor under your feet begins to shift!";
27 = "To the north, narrow passages wind through the core of the machinery. Sparks and smoke fly from the infernal devices. You aren't sure what they're for, but they seem very new. Maybe this place is a new weapon, waiting to be fired at the Empire.";
28 = "This safe house has magical defenses, designed to keep people like you from using them. Magical blades suddenly start whirling through the rooms.";
29 = "As you gape, a glowing shade appears in front of you. It says, _As you get closer, so I can help you more. First, you must pass this machine. Work upstream. Move fast. Step careful. Buttons are the key. I await you beyond the Great Wall._ The shade fades.";
30 = "You don't notice anything different after pushing the button. However, the machinery is pretty loud. If something did happen, you probably wouldn't hear it.";
31 = "A rank smell makes your eyes water. You look down into a deep trough, stained by foul, acidic slime. The trough leads from a huge tank to the west to the pit at the center of the fort. This trough channels the raw material of monsters into the inner workings of the fortress.";
32 = "You push the crystal in. There is a loud blatting noise. The crystal pops back out.";
33 = "You push the crystal in. You hear a soft rumbling noise, and then the sound of sliding stone, and then a series of clicks and hums.";
34 = "The only crystal on the pedestal you could push in is still in. There's nothing else you can do here at this point.";
35 = "You encounter a bunch more monsters. They throw themselves at you pitifully and mindlessly. Ghastly ichor drips from their mouths, and blah, blah, blah.";
36 = "You move deeper through this strange valley, when suddenly, as tends to happen any time you try to walk anywhere, a bunch more creatures appear and try to kill you. They drool, and slither, and blah, blah, blah.";
37 = "Suddenly, and without warning, there is a flash of light and the smell of sulfur, a bunch of monsters appear, and blah, blah, blah.";
38 = "You emerge from the valley, and see yet another in a series of the surface's lovely, interchangeable towns. Maybe there's more people who will tell you their names and jobs!";
39 = "You find the long lost, fabled Chamber of Uninteresting Monsters. Here the monsters that were underused in Avernum 3 wait, getting resentful and waiting for someone on which to take out their frustrations.";
40 = "You pull the lever, and you hear the now expected clattering of a portcullis, and blah, blah, blah.";
41 = "The crystal on the pedestal here is connected to the gate by long, thin, crystalline fibers. They run along the floor and enter the wall by the gates.";
42 = "There was an accident in these tunnels. A massive explosion collapsed most of the chambers. The surviving passages are choked with rubble. You find no signs of what the builders were trying to do that caused the cataclysm.";
43 = "This chamber contains the results of a golem experiment. Someone was trying to make a golem machine which could make the creatures on a larger scale.";
44 = "Several explosions ended the experiment prematurely. All of the devices are cracked and covered with dust.";
45 = "There is a dried-up shell of a body at the end of this passage. Falling rocks smashed this tall, thin humanoid. You can't tell anything else about who this was or where it was from.";

47 = "In this smoky hall, a network of beams pours energy into a set of crystals. They just look like inert blocks of rock but, whenever the beams activate, you can hear faint, high-pitched chattering in an incomprehensible language.";

60 = "Though this laboratory is still active and fully charged, it hasn't been used in a while. All of the beams are focused to power one pad. Golem raw materials are scattered everywhere. Golems were made here once, but the technique was too slow and inefficient.";
61 = "This laboratory is still stocked and powered, but it has not been used in quite a while. It looks like someone was trying to make golems here, with little success. The results of failed experiments still wait in magical prisons in the side alcoves.";
